MEP SnellandHardThe European Parliament recently voiced its concerns regarding rising food prices in the EU and developing countries at its plenary discussion in April 2008. I raised the point that we should have a closer look at our European legislation and whether it allows for an increase of agricultural productivity. We have numerous legislation restricting the use of fertilizers and pesticides leading to an increased burden on farmers to produce high quality products at an affordable price for everyone. I believe this is exactly what hinders an increase of productivity. I therefore propose we should reconsider what changes in this area are necessary whilst safeguarding high standards of protection of the consumer and the environment.

  1. It is a very important topic for discussion. Thank you for your article. And I am absolutely agree that authorities should think about high standards of protection of the consumer and the environment.

  2. Of course it is great to produce high quality products at an affordable price for everyone. But we shouldn’t forget about pesticides and about negative effects that they might cause. That’s why I am glad that such questions are discussed on a high level.

  3. I think that now it is a norm of our life. Better the quality of the products, higher the price. That’s why we should to choose what we want to have: a good quality or a low price. I have one interesting preposition: everybody will get a small piece of the land and plant something for his needs.

  4. To my mind it is impossible to produce high quality products at an affordable price for everyone. And I am not sure yhat these products will be really good. At the same time I can’t but agree that the question of agricultural productivity should be raised.

  5. Food and Health, these two points are still important for our life and for our future generation. And I think that it must be the main purpose of our parliaments. First we must pay our attention to the question of the protection of the nature. The healthy nature – the healthy food. I understand it like that.

  6. You have wtitten that the European Parliament recently voiced its concerns regarding rising food prices in the EU and developing countries at its plenary discussion in April 2008. And what are the results?
